Introduction

Raffe Mabbe was a bookseller in London, located at the Greyhound in St Paul's Churchyard. He was apprenticed to William Leake from 1602 and freed from his servitude in 1610. Mabbe was a member of the Stationers' Company and took on multiple apprentices during his career. He is noted for publishing notable works including the first edition of John Gwillim's Display of Heraldrie and The Spanish Bawd by James Mabbe.

Apprentice to WilIiam Leake { LEAKE, William ( - 1633) ‹ LBT 07160 › } for eight years from Christmas, 1603. Took up his freedom January 16th, 1610. [Arber, ii. 269; iii.683.] Amongst his publications may be mentioned the first edition of John Gwillim's Display of Heraldrie, and a play called The Spanish Bawd, by James Mabbe.
