Introduction

Robert Bolton was a bookseller and member of the Stationers' Company active in London during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Apprenticed to Thomas Dawson in 1576, he gained his freedom in 1584 and established himself as a bookseller with locations in Smithfield near Long Lane End and later on Chancery Lane near Holborn. Bolton took on at least ten apprentices during his career and published works including John Reynolds' Dolarnys Primrose in 1606, with his last recorded business activity in 1610.

BOLTON, or BOULTON (ROBERT), bookseller in London, 1598-1610; (1) In Smithfield, near Long Lane End, 1598; (2) Chancery Lane End, near Holborn, 1604. Son of Humfrey Bolton of Dubridge, co. Derby, husbandman. Apprentice to Thomas Dawson { DAWSON, Thomas ( - 1620) ‹ LBT 07918 › }, stationer, for eight years from July 25th, 1576 [Arber, ii. 67]. Took up his. freedom August 17th, 1584 [Arber, ii. 692]. His first book entry in the Registers does not occur before April 11th, 1598, and was qualified with the condition that he was not to print the book until he got better authority [Arber, iii. 110]. As his next entry is not until five years later [Arber, iii. 265], and no book has been found with his name earlier than 1604, it may be assumed that his first attempt as a publisher was not successful. Amongst his publications was John Reynolds' Dolarnys Primrose; or the first part of the Passionate Hermit, 1606. His last entry in the Registers occurs on November 24th, 1610, when in company with William White { WHITE, William ‹ LBT 07925 › } he entered John Jackson's The soule is immortall.
