Introduction

John Gypkin was a bookbinder and member of the Stationers' Company in London. He was freed by patrimony on 11 April 1586 following the death of his father John Gybkyn, a stationer, though he was not sworn into the company due to being deaf and mute. Gypkin took on four apprentices in the binding trade between 1586 and 1594, establishing himself as an active practitioner in the London book trade during the late sixteenth century.
