Introduction

Thomas Derbyshire was a bookbinder and member of the Stationers' Company in London. He was bound as an apprentice to Sampson Clarke in 1593 and gained his freedom by servitude in 1602. Derbyshire subsequently took on at least two apprentices in the bookbinding trade, including John Hodshall in 1610 and Thomas Osbolston in 1613, establishing himself as an active master craftsman in the London book trade.
