SERES (GYLES), bookbinder in London, was a Frenchman who came to England about 1554. In March, 1562, he took out letters of denization. [Pat. 4 Eliz., p. II, m. 7.] In 1567 he occurs in a list of aliens in Aldersgate Ward and is said to have been in London thirteen years. [R. of A., I, 326.] In the two returns of 1571 he is described as "bookebinder and denizein, of the Frenche nacion, hath byn here xvi yeares." [R. of A., I, 435; II, 47.] In 1576 he was still in St. Anne's Parish, Aldersgate Ward and paid a poll-tax offourpence. [R. of A., II, 186.] In 1582 he is entered as a bookbinder. In 1583 and 1585 he is entered very fully amongst the strangers in the liberties of St. Martin Le Grand and is mentioned as paying tribute to the Company of Stationers. [R. of A., II, 349, 392.] He is last found in 1595 noted as one of those who ha.d not paid his tax of eight pence, being too poor. [R. of A., II, 477.]
