SINGLETON (HUGH), printer in London, commenced work about 1548 at the sign of St. Augustine in St. Paul's Churchyard. In 1553 he had moved to the Double Hood in Thames Street. What he was doing for the next few years is not known, but he issued a number of books with the colophon "Rome, before ye castle of S. Angel at the sign of St Peter" and though without his name they contain his rebus or a copy of it. Some books in his type were issued at "Strasburg at the sign of the golden Bibel." He was an original member of the Stationers' Company, though not mentioned in the charter, and it is probable that when it was passed he was in disgrace abroad. In 1579 he was prosecuted for printing Stubbs' Discoverie of a gaping gulf, but was pardoned, and soon after was made Printer to the City of London. By 1578 he worked at the Golden Tun, Creede Lane, and in 1588 at the North door of Christ's Hospital. He gave up business in 1593. He used as a device a rebus with his initials and mark and a single tun. He was also a bookbinder and his mark is found on a binding roll which passed later to an Oxford binder who made considerable use of it.
