Introduction

John Thomas was a bookbinder and member of the Stationers' Company in London. He was bound to Christopher Butler in 1577 and freed from servitude in 1587, after which he established himself as a master craftsman. Thomas took on at least fourteen apprentices in binding between 1590 and 1635, demonstrating a substantial and long-lived business. He had a son, Robert Thomas, who gained entry to the Stationers' Company through patrimony in 1621.
