SUTTON (LEWIS), stationer in London, was Warden with Henry Pepwell { PEPWELL, Henry ( - 1541) ‹ LBT 28281 › } of the Stationers' Company in 1526. [Arber, I, xxi.] He is mentioned in the Records at the Guildhall as having entered into recognizances along with Alan Ryppe { RYPPE, Alan ‹ LBT 30089 › }, John Gough { GOUGH, John ( - 1543) ‹ LBT 07541 › } and Henry Tab { TABE, Henry ( - 1549) ‹ LBT 29168 › } on December 12th, 1532. [Journal 13, fol. 291.] In 1534-5 he was defendant in an action brought by John Gough and John Rastell { RASTELL, John ( - 1536) ‹ LBT 28539 › } relating to the house with the sign of the Mermaid used as a printing office. [Bibliographica, II, 438.] The name of Ludovicus Suethon, who in partnership with W. de Worde { WORDE, Wynkyn de ( - 1534) ‹ LBT 02699 › } and John Reynes { REYNES, John ( - 1542) ‹ LBT 28236 › } had a Sarum Gradual printed at Paris in 1527, may very probably be a foreign mis-spelling of Sutton. The last mention of Sutton is in the Letters and papers of Henry VIII [Vol. xiv, pt. ii, p. 11.] "Aug. 12 1539 Receipt by Lewys Sutton, bookbinder of London of 5 mks from Wm Hatton of Haldenby for lands in Northamptonshire sold to him." The will of a Lewis Sutton, perhaps this stationer, dated 1541, was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury.
