[Plomer, ''Wills'', p. 8.] He is last mentioned in the Returns of Aliens in 1550 when he was still living in Shoe Lane. His goods were valued at five pounds and he paid a tax of five shillings. In the two wills where he is mentioned as a binder only his Christian name is given, but W. de Worde gives the address, and we find from the Lay Subsidy Rolls of 1540-41 that he was the only person in Shoe Lane with the name Nowell.

HAVY (NOWELL), bookbinder in London, was a native of France and came to England in 1523. In 1535 he received a bequest from W. de Worde { WORDE, Wynkyn de ( - 1534) ‹ LBT 02699 › } "To Nowell the bokebinder in shoo lane the value of xx s sterling in books." In 1541 he took out letters of denization. "Nowell Havy from France, married to an English woman. In England 18 years 14 April 1541" [Deniz. Roll, 36 Henry VIII], and in the same year is mentioned in the Returns of Aliens as dwelling in Shoe Lane and paying a tax of four pence. [R. of A., I, 56.] In 1544 he is again entered, his goods being valued at twenty shillings, and his tax is again four pence. In 1545 he received a legacy from Edward Ylle { YLLE, Edward ( - 1545) ‹ LBT 28259 › } of three shillings and four pence. [Plomer, Wills, p.
