== Introduction ==
<div style="width:90ch;">
William Newton was a bookbinder and member of the Stationers' Company in London. Bound as an apprentice to Christopher Gowre in 1576, he gained his freedom from servitude in 1583 and subsequently became an established master craftsman in the binding trade. Newton took on seven apprentices between 1585 and 1607, and was clothed (admitted to the livery) in 1599, indicating his status as a substantial member of the Stationers' Company.
